Not-Your-Typical jelly roll quilts
Book launch and review
I am back with another book review, this one shares some gorgeous ideas for those jelly rolls in your sewing area. Winning in many ways by not looking like typical jelly roll quilts!

I am really keen to dig out a jelly roll and have the opportunity to play with a few of Michelle’s designs in her new book.
I also loved poring over the pictures in the book and seeing how Michelle has quilted her designs. As a longarmer, this is always of interest. How can the quilting enhance the quilt design. Many options so it’s great to see how others have chosen to quilt them.
Fun fact: I will be able to give away a digital copy of this inspiring Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts book. Join the draw by heading over to Instagram and follow From Bolt to Beauty and Sunflower Quilting.
Not-your-typical jelly roll quilts… The official description
“AS A QUILTER, I LOVE JELLY ROLLS. It’s how they display—all neatly wound together,
with a peek of each fabric along the edge—that makes them so irresistible. They’re the perfect
fabric purchase because they offer a cross-section of a collection without taking up much
space in my stash or much money out of my wallet.
As a quilt designer, I welcome the challenge of developing patterns for Jelly Rolls. Doing so
works the part of my brain that enjoys a difficult crossword and does jigsaw puzzles without
looking at the box top. For me, designing with Jelly Rolls is a quilty brainteaser!”
—Excerpted Introduction from Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts
The book…
I like the Michelle has delved into the basics of a jelly roll. You might think that sounds a bit twee but there are some factors that are good to know to make the most of the fabric strips. We all like our projects to be successful, so this information is really helpful.
The projects range from wall hanging to large quilts, and various in between. There are 14 fun projects, plus the piecing methods shared in the book mean that you might not instantly recognise the quilt as being made from a jelly roll.
We all love that jelly rolls are made up from a range of fabric and generally work together well. Michelle encourages you to seperate and be choosy, then add in some other fabric and magic happens. I had to look carefully on some of the designs to see where the jelly roll fabric was placed. So clever!
