zero waste quilting

Book launch and review

I am so pleased to have the opportunity to share my thoughts for the book launch of this new book, Zero Waste Quilting by Patty Murphy.

I love seeing what the Patty has created. This book is quite inspiring and I agree with her theory and concept of using ALL the bits left over until there are none left.

Fun fact: I will be able to give away a digital copy of this inspiring book. Join the draw by adding you name to the email list below. Please head over to Instagram and follow Patty Murphy and Sunflower Quilting

zero waste quilting… The official description

The idea behind this book is layered, yet simple. First, I want you to recognize the power of your stash. Use the fabrics you already own to create the vibrant, dynamic quilts in this book, or any other book or project, with little to no fabric purchased. In fact, apart from backings, I made most of the quilts in this book with fabric from my stash. Second, if you do need or choose to buy yardage or supplement your stash to make a quilt in this book, you can make the secondary projects to still end up with virtually no waste. Regardless of the way you procure fabric, the result is you reduce consumption by using fabric you already own (refusing to buy more), supplementing with small amounts of fabric you need (refusing to buy in excess), and utilizing the material to the end (redesigning). It’s an ingenious idea in quilt design and scrap management, and a better use of our resources.”

—Excerpted Introduction from Zero Waste Quilting

The book…

C&T Publishing and Patty are hosting a book launch tour and there are a number of creators that are involved and sharing their thoughts. You can find more info about the book launch here.

Patty has deloped some larger patterns that are simply gorgeous, and then for each of these quilt patterns there are subsequent patterns to use the leftover fabric. There are also yardage requirements in case you just need to make that project!

There are between 4-9 extra projects for using the remaining fabric for each larger pattern. So many to choose from, 38 projects in total.

The Author

Patty shares her reason for writing her book and how she came to think about the creative industry with regard to waste. I agree with the concept of using all the fabric scraps until they are so minimal, they are not worth keeping. It’s certainly a challenge to think about our fabric stash in this light.

“She who dies with the most fabric doesn’t win – she leaves a lot of pretty fabric sitting on a shelf” Patty Murphy.
