After working backstitch, change to a contrasting thread and work from right to left. Use a blunt needle or use the needle backwards. Come up at the start of your design and whip your thread over and under each stitch. Be careful not to catch any fabric.
Other stitches can be ‘whipped’, such as stem stitch and chain stitch.
