2022 Monthly colour challenge – july

What is this year long plan?

The Monthly Color Challenge is in it’s fifth year, and I am excited to join in again for 2022. This year we’re getting our colour inspiration from Spices.

Each month there is a change in colour and a new block. You can see all the colours to come this year at this post on Jen’s blog. Jen also shares all the info on what you need and you can choose to sign up to receive the block sent straight to your inbox.

My july Block

I have planned a consistent background of the white for this year’s quilt and will be adding the feature colour color. There are a plethora of scraps in my studio so I have vowed to sew from them if I possibly can.

This month is Sumac represented by the colour purple. I admit I had to look up Sumac as I don’t think it’s common here is Australia, here’s what I found online

“Sumac is a spice that has a pungent tart, lemony flavor. It is a coarsely ground, dark red powder and blends well with chili, allspice, and thyme.”

“Sumac, also spelled sumach, is any of about 35 species of flowering plants in the genus Rhus and related genera in the cashew family. Sumacs grow in subtropical and temperate regions throughout the world, including East Asia, Africa, and North America. Sumac is used as a spice, as a dye, and in medicine.”

I imagine that whilst the notes speak of it being dark red, ther may be a species or 2 that are leaning to wards purple. Perhaps I should have used a red/purple in my block instead. This blue purple is what I had and it will be perfect in the end quilt.

So, if you are keen to sew along with us this year, there’s a layout design for you at the end of the year, head over to Jen’s blog and join in. The blocks are free for the release month, and you can have them sent to your inbox.

Quilt Colour fun…

Purple, have I used purple in a quilt pattern?

Yes I have, let’s look at Harlequin Heart, the original version.

Harlequin Heart quilt pattern

This pattern is a quick make with simple squares and some raw edge applique. I also quilted this one is a heart pattern.
