2024 monthly color challenge – march

Welcome to the 2024 Monthly Color Challenge. This event is hosted by Patterns by Jen.

What is the challenge

The 2024 Monthly Color Challenge is the 7th year of running. This year the inspiration is Tropical Fish.

Each month there is a new colour and a new block. You can see all the colours to come this year at this post on Jen’s blog. The challenge is to make the block in the colour for that month, then at the end you have enough blocks to make a quilt, there is a quilt layout provided during the year, or you can do your own.

Jen also shares all the info on what you need and you can choose to sign up to receive the block sent straight to your inbox. The blocks are free for the month then they will have a small cost. Sign up to her newsletter to receive the blocks free.

Fabric choices + backgrounds

My background is a sand coloured solid that I had in my shop, I have used most of it for this project, there wasn’t a lot left on the bolt. The idea of tropical fish gave me the idea of using this fabric and it representing the sand on the ocean floor.

The colour of the month is provided by leftover fabric from the Maple and Eucalyptus quilt I made in 2023. Pattern by Angie and Karen. They are Andover solids and are gorgeous and bright.

March features a fabric colour of red and the Andover colour is called cherry?.

Quilting thoughts

I have found a collection of fish quilting patterns in my computerised machine and am toying with the idea of using these to quilt each of the blocks.

Previously I have used a themed pantograph on the quilts I have made using the Colour Challenge from Patterns by Jen.

What do you think? A fish in each block or a themed pantograph over the whole quilt? Let me know in the comments
